Semana Santa or Easter as it is known for in England is the most important and oldest festival of the Christian Church, celebrating the resurrection of Christ.
As we all know Easter is celebrated by giving chocolate eggs and decorating eggs with different colours and designs, although eggs in general were a traditional symbol of fertility and rebirth in chrisitanity, for the celebration of Eastertide eggs symbolize the empty tomb of Jesus.
The week leading up to Easter is called Holy Week.
This is the Thursday before Easter Day.
On Maundy Thursday Christians remember when Jesus ate the Passover meal with his disciples, sharing bread and drinking wine. Christians refer to this meal as the Last Supper
Why do we celebrate Good Friday?
Good Friday is celebrated on the Friday before Easter Sunday. It commemorates Jesus Christ's Passion, crucifixion, and death.
Good Friday is a day of mourning in church and to remember what this means for their faith. After Jesus was crucified on the Friday his body was taken down from the cross and buried in a cave tomb.
The tomb was guarded by Roman soldiers and an enormous stone was put over the entrance.
Easter Day, which falls on Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
On Sunday Mary Magdalene and some of Jesus's disciples visited the tomb. They found the stone had been moved and that Jesus's body had gone. Jesus was seen later that day by Mary and the disciples, and for forty days afterwards by many people. His followers realised that God had raised Jesus from the dead. Christians call this the resurrection.
Easter, also called Pascha (Greek, Latin) or Resurrection Sunday, it says in the New Testament that he resurrected on the third day after his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD
The naming of the celebration as “Easter” seems to goes back to the name of a pre-Christian goddess in England, Eostre, who was celebrated at beginning of spring.
So from Shopping Center Puerto Rico we wish you a very Happy Easter and hope that you will come along and join us to celebrate this special day.
